Here's a cool new 3D Printing Contest everyone should check it out? Possibly tie in a Halloween motif?

In collaboration with the Animation World Network, the largest animation-related publishing group on the Internet, Shapeways is proud to announce a new design contest. All character modelers and animators from around the world are invited to participate in the contest entitled "Does Your Character Have Character."

The contest should prove to be challenge due to the fact that it is a 3D printing contest. Because of the maximum polycount of 100,000 and a definition of 0.2mm in the produced model, all the high end methods associated with shading, lighting etc have to be thrown out the window. It's strictly back to basics. The aim of the contest: what does your character represent and how do you show that with your model. The focus: design and the limitless creativity one has for it.

To enter the contest simply upload your model to Shapeways and add the tag AWN to it. You can submit designs to the contest until October 20th. The winner will will be announced on the 30th of October. The winner will receive a $250 Shapeways certificate for 3D Printing. The top three designs will also be featured on Shapeways and AWN.

Guest JamesDysonAward

I work doing the PR for Dyson in the UK and we're currently open for entries to our 2009 design awards. We've had one good entry so far, which I have managed to get on Wired.co.uk, with interest from two national newspapers. Timing means that they might not run the story...but they are keen to showcase any good inventions. We need more entrants!

The winner of the award gets £10,000 but even before the winner is announced in September, you will have the Dyson PR teams getting you exposure in national media. The award runs in 21 countries and each country is responsible for generating positive publicity.

Last year's winner, Michael Chen received global coverage for his reactiv cycling jacket. We had him on national TV, radio and in newspapers and blogs all over the world. Google his name/reactiv and you'll see.

So I am asking you all...please submit some entries so that I can have fun PR'ing your incredible designs! It's really straight-forward and could result in your idea being seen my millions of people. And you might even win £10,000.

Please message me with any questions. Thanks, Camilla

The James Dyson Award is open to product design, industrial design and engineering university level students (or graduates within 3 years of graduation) who have studied in the following countries:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK, and USA.

RENDER DEMO Is proud to introduce our 1st ever design competition called “Time in the Future - TIMEPIECE”

In todays world, time is a rare luxury. There just isn’t enough time in the day to do everything you set out to accomplish. We wanted to showcase a product that could keep you on track and possibly give you some extra time at the end of your day.

What is TIME IN THE FUTURE? How will we spend our time? Will we just let it pass us by? Many brands have created compelling products to keep track of time. We don’t want to handcuff you into a specific area, so we wish to keep the brief as open as possible so you can be very conceptual in your problem solving. Design a timepiece of some sort, something that keeps track of time. Start out by studying the market and see what cool products already exist. Research some of the top watch brands such as Fossil, Swatch, Nike, Rolex, Tag Heuer, etc. Then determine which area you would like to solve for- Wrist-based, Wearable or Conceptual. Keep in mind, there are no wrong answers. Define a problem and solve it with your design. The further out there you are with your idea, the better. We want this to be very open and not limit your creativity. Have fun! That's what design is all about!

Would your chosen brand be recognizable even if all the logo’s were removed?

How would you feel if you were unable to tell time for a week?

How would the general public react about your chosen design if they saw it on someone?

What would the environmental impact of your design be?

What improvements in working conditions does your design bring?

We are very excited to launch this first of many design competitions. We really hope you enjoy this topic... And of course we really look forward to seeing your work!!
