How would you Define Industrial Design?

Recommended Posts

Guest Callum Nash

Design// is the facilitation of the human intellect, the inter-evolution of man and his external world, the solution and creator of problems, the invisible unfolding force defining our synthetic world, growing in importance, insipidly intergrating, turning on random chance yet not beyond the grip of reason, mankinds tribute to, and emulation of God.

Ideal: to enhance and to support the living experience of a human being.

Reality: design products for people while fulfilling the wishes of the marketeers and the engineers.

I agree but I would phrase the second line as:

"fulfilling the wishes of the marketers while anticipating the requirements of the engineers."

Carefully observed. It's a meditation while putting the jigsaw puzzle through: ideas, aesthetics, value, functionality, material, process, trend etc.

You hurry up you may mess!

Do it with love and cool mind you get almost every thing to work in its simplest and effective form.

DESIGN IS TO SIMPLIFY THINGS

Agree on this. And it is always an interesting puzzle, with many people involved that have different interests, in such a way that the process can have some 'company politics' inside.

I believe industrial design used to be the design and development of goods for industrial production. As almost all production nowadays is industrial, we better use the word product design. Some people get also mixed up with the term industrial design, they believe we are talking about design and engineering of industrial goods, like machines.

And when you are talking about designing products for industrial (read: mass) production, that brings always the problem of having many compromises in the design to make the product attractive for everyone. The best design in terms of good ergonomics, good interaction, etc. would be personalized design, or very small series.

I just read it information about there industrial design methed search the industrial design methed information late of information

Architecture and industrial design

Architecture and industrial design are often seen as enterprises, which constitute a whole, or to put it another way, design is often argued to be an holistic enterprise.[13] In architecture and industrial design holism tends to imply an all-inclusive design perspective, which is often regarded as somewhat exclusive to the two design professions. Holism is often considered as something that sets architects and industrial designers apart from other professions that participate in design projects. This view is supported and advocated by practising designers and design scholars alike, who often argue that architecture and/or industrial design have a distinct holistic character.

Education reform

The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives identifies many levels of cognitive functioning, which can be used to create a more holistic education. In authentic assessment, rather than using computers to score multiple choice tests, a standards based assessment uses trained scorers to score open-response items using holistic scoring methods.[14] In projects such as the North Carolina Writing Project, scorers are instructed not to count errors, or count numbers of points or supporting statements. The scorer is instead instructed to judge holistically whether "as a whole" is it more a "2" or a "3". Critics question whether such a process can be as objective as computer scoring, and the degree to which such scoring methods can result in different scores from different scorers.

Industrial Design is a cross between engineering and art. Its more analytical than art but more creative than engineering. However, its also about marketing, science, invention, and research. As compared to engineering and art, industrial design is only about 100 years old, while the former two are about 10,000 years old. Our field could only exist after mass production was developed.
