About selected speakers
Stefano Giovannoni: founded Giovannoni Design srl in Milan in 1998. Its core business is designing industrial products – particularly furniture, kitchen and bathroom ware, as well as domestic appliances, electronics and automotive products – for many of the world’s best-known brands. They include Alessi, Fiat, Toto, NTT Docomo, ZTE, L’Oreal, Oregon Scientific, Samsung and 3M. His bestselling creations have led to him being described as the “Champion of Superiority and Popularity”, “The King Midas of Design” and “The Most Bankable Designer”.
Xavier Lust: In 2000 Xavier Lust started his collaboration with leading international furniture producers such as MDF Italia, Driade, De Padova, CerrutiBaleri, Fiam, Extremis. His work is clearly identifiable through the visible tension he gives to his objects, and the curves inspired by his innovative (de)formation process of metallic surfaces. He has received dozens of awards including Compasso d’Oro.
Zhang Lei:  works with his colleagues Jovana and Christoph as a chief designer at Pinwu Design Studio, which he co-founded in Hangzhou, China. As a designer, he focuses on deconstructing Chinese traditional crafts and then fusing them with contemporary design, rather than merely combining the traditional and modern. Pinwu’s Piao Paper Chair won the 2011 Best of the Best Red Dot Award, and its Tie Chair was nominated by the London Design Museum for the 2013 Design of the Year Award. Pinwu also curated the From Yuhang and Rong-Handmade in Hangzhou exhibitions.
Alain Gilles: Belgian-born Alain Gilles decided to follow his passion for design after working in the international financial world. He enrolled in an Industrial design course and opened his own studio in 2007, where he is developing his personal approach to product and furniture design, art direction and interior architecture. Gilles has collaborated with several prominent furniture and appliance brands, and his products have won a number of international prizes, including a Red Dot Best of the Best award and Design for Asia Gold Award.
Joyce Wang: gained a double-major in Architecture and Materials Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and later attended the Royal College of Art in London. Her architectural approach, cinematic references and interdisciplinary inspirations give her award-winning projects a sense of drama and narrative that captivate and engage audiences. Wang’s latest commissions have been the guest rooms at the legendary Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles and the Ammo restaurant in the Asia Society Hong Kong Center. She founded the Joyce Wang Studio, Hong Kong in 2010.
Charles Kaisin: Belgian Architect and Designer Charles Kaisin is a pioneer in using recycled materials to create sustainable and contemporary design. He has been commissioned to create products by well-known brands, and he has worked as the Art Director at Val Saint Lambert and as a Project Manager for Hermann Miller. He has been a Guest Lecturer at the Hong Kong Design Institute, and he is currently a Design Teacher at the Institut Supérieur d’Architecture Saint-Luc.
Danny Venlet: Born in Australia, Danny Venlet studied interior design at the Institute for Architecture and Arts in Belgium. Returning to Australia, he attracted international attention with his interior projects, such as the Burdekin Hotel in Sydney and Q-bars, an Australian chain of nightclubs. Today, his award-winning design work ranges from private mansions, offices, bars and restaurants to small objects and furniture. Characterized by a contemporary international style, his designs arise from an interaction between art, sculpture and function.
