We use a "dunk tank" of CA (cyanoacrylate, or Super Glue) and immerse our models in it. This allows it to soak through the starch material and becomes pretty hard. You obviously need a lot of CA, and lots of latex gloves.

Indeed, its quite carcenogenic - same stuff as they use for fingerprinting, isnt it?
