ya thats pretty much what I am talking about.

except I went over them about 8 times.

also, I dont think you need to number your lines from 1-20 or something, just keep going and going. I prefer you just doing the 'left' side of your page right now. As the right side is a bit more structure, and a bit more work.

on a normal letter size paper, i think you should be able to draw more than 100 lines per page. Don't draw long lines right now, just start with the best you can ( the length that you can keep it kind of straight).

btw, sketchyd told me b4 that we could even draw little circles or big circles in between the lines to practice on circles.

good luck, lookin good

thanks gringoire,

my current website was very plain to begin with, i just wanted to block in the main pages as a foundation because at the end of the day im paying to host the site.

the main elements on the current site i wanted to get in place where my chosin colour schyme of Dark Grey for background, Orange for higlights, white for text, (and with the new updates im making) blue for Links. i feel the Dark background makes any colour on the pages stand out more vibrant.

as for my main logo, i created it with a few elements in mind.

1. my name "Mark Keenan"

2. my star sign Scorpio

3. the Scorpio starsign is an M with an Arrow tail

4. Design

i think its simple, too the point, and is personal too me.

for a while i was wondering should i call it Scorpio Design ? what you guys think about that ? but i feel i settled to having my name in place.

with these mock website designs im trying to just get the general layout in place. then i can work on the graphics and illustrations, then animation and polishing it up to look Professionl and formal, yet relaxed and artisic. this might clash so im trying to get the ballance just right.

Its early days still, but in the meantime im producing these mock websites so i get a better idea of what elements works and what doesnt.

all feedback welcome, tips, or things to improve.

Cheers.

a lil reminder:

what is the most important about the website is the content, so how are you going to show off your work. Even more important, how are you going to organize them in a way that is smooth, and comfortable to look at, of course your ideas has to be clear.

If your website looks professional, I think some graphic art company would hire you rather than industrial design company.

Looking good so far though, that was just a little reminder.

take a look at other people's portfolio

hay guys,

just got an email back from a Placement Job i applied for but was turned down.

i had asked why i was turned down at this stage, and what i could do to improve for futre applications.

this is the email i got back. the company is called "The Design Zoo" based in a near by city to mine. (about 35mins drive away)

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you but we’ve been flat out. Although you had good sketch work and a solid understanding of 3D we felt that there was a lack of HTML & CSS experience in your portfolio.

What we would say would help your portfolio is an interactive flash presentation of a 3D model being exploded with information about its benefits and features. This would improve the interactivity in your portfolio.

I hope that helps and we wish you all the best in finding a suitable placement position.

even tho i was turned down for the job, i was glad to hear that they thought my sketching and 3D understanding was good. that i just need to work on a few areas to up my game and portfolio.

its made me wana do some sketching and stuff now :)

this is just random thoughts.

Your webpage looks cool, ill give ya that.

Im not too sure if it is really "helping" you though.

What i mean by that is, as a viewer of your site, im far more interested in your layout and graphics than what is really important your design. And this might sound harsh but if the layout is more interesting than your design. Then there obviously is a problem there. You are either gonna have to tone your website down a bit so its not competing with your work and acutually winning. OR THE BETTER OPTION would be to continue working on your work and get your skills up. so that its not shunned out by your fancy webpage.

Also, your layout is very "LOUD"

like a huge "look at me, attention getter" style.

Which is fine, but the content should have the same or be even Louder than your layout.

Maybe for now, since your skills arent up there yet, maybe you should just stick with soemthing like a blogspot where you can post your work.

And once you have some killer stuff, then make a website.

Just a thought.

hay,

i didnt find that harsh, i actually 'Get' what you mean.

and it will be something else for me to think about when creating my website. i understand that my work that i show on my site should be the most important thing to the viewer.

in my defence i have two points to make.

1. shouldnt my website be an extenstion of my work, (meaning it, in itself is showing i know how to do HTML, Flash and website design ?) also im a student who will be leaving Universty in about a years time, so shouldnt my website Be "Flashy", and "yea .. Look at me" becuase il be trying to get jobs, (as long as it dosent come across as "Yea look at me, im big headed about what i do"). where as im aiming for the "hay look at me, stop and look at my intresting website" (rather than a plain old boring one)

2. i feel layout and good use of Typography and Gridsystem is just as important as the Design and graphics and the work i show. becuase again it shows that i have a good understanding of how to layout my work and understand the fundmentals of using a grid system and even bending the rules of using the grid.

i understand the comment you posted. and i will greatly take it on board. i also dont feel i have the time to sit back and just practice my art skills all day untill they are up to par even tho i know i need to improve. what im trying to say is, that i need to do both at the same time. (both practice and improve, and, working towards finising universtity, my website and geting a job)

it seems like a big task to accomplish but i gota do it, i have to succeced.

thank you for your comment Sketchyd

sure it should be, and im not telling you to make a boring website.

The website should show what you know about type, layout, grid, etc but right now its over powering it.

Like the webpage was ure main focus and your design was an afterthought.

yea i understand you know how to do multiple things, but as a viewer, ill be confused as what it is you are really "trying to sell" are you trying to sell yourself as a web designer? a product designer? or something else? its not very clear. It even feels like you, the designer also have no idea what it is that you really want to tell us.

Heres something one of our teachers said the other day. She said,"have you seen those trans student who always puts a hot babe next to their cars? (we all nodded) I asked one of the students, why did you put that girl next to your car? (the student replied, "so that it would attract the viewers to the design.") The teacher then said, well if you need a girl standing next to your car to make it look good. Then it obviously it isnt a great design."

....something to think about.
