Wacom Cintiq

Recommended Posts

Guest AdamMichell

Hi

I'm thinking of making a purchase of the Wacom over Xmas.

Does anybody know if you can use it on programs like Solidworks and 3dsMax?

The Wacom simply acts as a screen and the pen acts as a mouse. You can use it in any application (well - besides maybe games which won't respond properly to pen inputs) but unless the application uses specific pen functionality you probably won't get much use out of it.

Alias Studio for example has built in sketching which makes use of the pen. Max and Solidworks I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be better to just use the mouse.

IMO a Cintiq is a great investment - even if you decide to sell it a few years down the line it will still retain a lot of value.

To me sketching on a regular Intuos tablet isn't natural in any way shape or form. It's a mixed art of learning how to make a line, erase it, remake the same line, erase it, and repeat 10x until you get a line you want.

Digital sketching has a lot of advantages, and the Cintiq lets you make use of them. When I was in school I opted for the slightly cheaper/portable Tablet PC option vs the Cintiq - but now that I've been working on a Cintiq for so long it's value is tremendous. Just being able to sketch out a quick 3D surface and then do all your details on it is very powerful. Combining all the different tools at your disposal means you can work very fast in cranking out ideas and iterations. You never have to worry about smudging a marker rendering again either.

If my house was burning down and I could run in and save one thing it would be my Cintiq.

My girlfriend would be on her own.

Buy it now.
