How To Create A Tyre Pattern In Solidworks?

Recommended Posts

Guest mcgreg

As CrisDuncan said, the command wrap is the best way to cut-extrude the tire thread. Just measure the perimeter of the face you want to thread and design a sketch with the pattern you want to cut.

I haven't tried what I'm goign to suggest next, but it might work... Since you're working with a pattern, you can do just a small section of it and then use a circular pattern of the wrap feature to cut the entire tyre.

For whatever it's worth I made a tutorial on one way to build a performance auto tire.

Among other things it addresses the issues that Eobet had with tapering the tread going down the sidewall.

I once did something similar in Inventor.

I did a flat pattern in sheet metal about 20mm thick, then did two folds on a 300mm bend radius through 180 degrees to make a tube. I then did a revolve cut to profile the tread in cross section (to 7mm thick IIRC) and another revolve to add the sidewalls and bead
