Human Factors Prize $10,000 award!

The Human Factors and Ergonomics Society welcomes submissions for the 2012 Human Factors Prize for Excellence in HF/E Research and the 2012 Stanley H. Caplan User-Centered Product Design Award. The nomination deadlines for both awards are approaching.

2012 Human Factors Prize Topic: The HF/E Science Behind Product Design

Human Factors, the flagship journal of HFES, invites contributions that explore how the science of human factors/ergonomics can facilitate the design of many types of products. The specific product is not the focus; rather, we are seeking research that would facilitate product design in general. With this in mind, a contribution that describes how HF/E science has influenced an aspect of a product - the display on a smart phone, for example - would also be appropriate, as long as the focus is on the research behind that aspect.

Manuscripts should be uploaded to the Manuscript Central Web site (http://mc.manuscript...om/humanfactors) between June 1 and July 1. The winner will be announced on August 15 and invited to make a presentation about the work during a session at the HFES 56th Annual Meeting, to be held October 22-26 in Boston. The award carries a $10,000 cash prize and publication in the December 2012 issue of Human Factors.

Eligibility requirements and other details may be found at the Human Factors Prize Web page, http://www.hfes.org/...es/hfprize.html and the FAQ page, http://www.hfes.org/...hfprizefaq.html.

2012 Stanley H. Caplan User-Centered Product Design Award

The HFES Product Design Technical Group (PDTG) welcomes submissions for its 11th Annual Stanley H. Caplan User-Centered Product Design Award. The award emphasizes innovative and user-centered approaches to HF/E and industrial design.

This year’s winning product or system will be recognized during the HFES 2012 Annual Meeting. The winner will receive a $1,000 honorarium and make a presentation about the product and the development methodology during the PDTG’s award session.

The deadline for submitting award nominations is May 25, 2012. Eligibility requirements, submission guidelines, and information about past winners are available at http://tg.hfes.org/pdtg/awards.htm.

GrabCAD is the largest online community by, and for, Mechanical Design Engineers. Whether an engineer looking to share their talent and designs with the world, a customer looking to crowd-source solutions to their toughest design problems from our membership, in need of contracting directly with an engineer for ad-hoc design work in lieu of a full-time hire, or simply wish to download from our extensive catalog of free models, GrabCAD brings the power of the web to all mechanical design needs.

By using crowd-sourcing in sensitive design areas, the massive brain-power of large groups can yield many, many different nuanced approaches to the same problem. The customer has the benefit of harvesting many surprising ideas which can combine to make a vastly superior final product, in either performance or safety, as compared to any small group or individual.
