  1. I used to use trias before they changed the design, they were very good but I'm not sure about the current version (with the clear barrel). People use Copics which are very expensive but they are refillable like trias so that'll make up the cost. They have a really good feel and nice colors without being stinky like the Chartpaks.
  2. I'm not surprised. The design competition and annual review are the only things I've touched it for in the past 10 years.
  3. You can blend 2 shapes together in illustrator to get a gradient that follows your snake shape. Have the color of the snake be one shape and the shadow another and it'll blend the 2 together smoothly (you'll have to click that option). Also there are some photoshop type effects that you can do like taking a line, apply a blur to it, then lighten the opacity. That will look just like a soft airbrushed line/shadow in photoshop.

    If you're looking for a more precise tool to draw lines, I would suggest you use illustrator (or at the very least, the path tool in photoshop and then "stroke path") Those will be vector lines which are smooth and editable, very easy to tweak. On another subject, you seem very passionate about design. Please try to get into a school, it will help you a lot. After you've learned some specific types of things first in that environment, then you'll be able to move forward on your own but you need that base first. Good luck to you.

    Rendering Stl Imports In Solidworks

    Why do you need to render in Solidworks? From what I understand, Max has much better rendering capabilities, wouldn't it be better to do it there?
  6. If you don't have a client, give yourself a project as if it was from a client. Model what you can as close to real world constraints as you're able to. Don't wait for a client, they won't give you the work if you don't already know how to do it. So make up your own projects, pick something out there that isn't very well designed, redesign and model it as if you were doing it for that company. Good luck!
  7. Search for "DiMonte group" They have a lot of ppt presentations that go over advanced tactics and advice for quality solidworks surfacing. The presentations I saw are on older versions, but the core concepts are there.
  8. I'll agree with zyxs, rhino will be your cheapest best bet. But keep in mind, it isn't quite the same type of modeler, it's more based on surfaces and isn't parametric like solidworks is. But it will read native solidworks files (rhino 4 will, not sure if 3 did or not). It's also used a lot so you can find lots of tutorials on it.
  9. A shame so few IDers take any interest in this stuff. I know lots of people training online in other fields. Once again, it seems industrial designers are followers and not leaders. After graduating and working for a while but seeing that I needed new skills, I pretty much did my own grad school from information that I could found online. I think it really depends on what it is that you're trying to learn. Some things that you get from school students like learning to defend your ideas during crit, I couldn't imagine could be replicated as well online, kind of like online dating. It can get you so far, but there is still the matter of learning how to communicate with your body language in person, etc. Granted, with the ability to telecommute now, it may not be a really serious issue. I could see online being used well for specific skill development, the basics that all id'ers should learn in school but for whatever reasons don't.
  10. I'm not sure of the exact terminology, but could it have been an issue of the mapping direction. In some programs if you're mapping on an image you choose circular, cylinder, round, etc...and depending on which you choose, the pattern will converge at one point, in your instance, the center point. Possibly changing the direction or type of the map it uses, if that's possible, might fix that. Just a guess.
  11. Sounds like you're just using the wrong tool. Solidworks is not meant for stuff like that. Be flexible and if it's for a presentation, take a picture and collage it. No cnc machines are making the strands of the steel wool, trying to model that in solidworks is a total misuse of the tool. Use it for when you need to show solids and surfaces accurately that may need to be modified or sent for tooling. Don't try to use it as a generic 3d graphics type of program.
  12. What you have now in rhino is good. If you want a faster workflow, depending on the product solidworks would be a good choice. Being able to change the model parametrically is much faster if you set it up correctly than it would be in rhino having to delete and rebuild surfaces all of the time. I practiced some in rhino and then in solidworks and have stuck with using solidworks for the speed and modification benefits. People will always want to keep coming and changing stuff last minute, that's where the benefit will come in. But I still keep my rhino knowledge up to date because it's really good for trouble shooting and doing some complicated surfaces that give solidworks trouble. So it stays around as a translator and trouble-shooter. For rendering, Vray gives you good results if you know what you're doing and it has a plugin for rhino. Also there's Hypershot for quick instant renders, not as realistic as vray but it's a difference most people (especially non-designers) won't even see, but the speed increase it gives you definitely makes it a good option. I believe vray also has an instant render out now that's like hypershot but I haven't seen it in action yet.
  13. That was the first photo renderer I used and it's nice. Once I learned Vray, I found that Vray seems to just make more sense. Look online for a good tutorial and they'll get you up to speed on vray in no time.

    3d Modeling Help

    Yes, you'll model in something like Solidworks or Rhino, then use a renderer such as Vray or Hypershot. Depending on the product, sometimes a photoshop render is just as good (depending on your skill level) but modeling and rendering is so standard now, that will be the main way to create this. Photoshop can be used to post-process the rendering or put it into a different environment, etc...
