  1. Hello Everyone This month we'll be doing Lounge Furniture. This is either in our outdoor furniture where people are most likely to relax and spend the day off when at home or at a hotel or spa. I've included examples below but this month anything goes as long as it is sketched. Please Note: Best sketch in terms of color, layout, impact and ability to convey the design across wins sketch of the month. This challenge is be judged by a poll at the end of the month. This is a friendly competition If you are unsure of whats required, please read passed challenges or ask As always, crit is welcome (but keep it constructive and clean) Enjoy CRICHTON

  3. Awesome night out I think... Great seeing old friends.

  4. Avoid the N1 south at all costs! 1 hour on 6km I isn't fun

  5. Last exam on the 9th, portfolio evaluation on the 18th and expo on the 25th. Almost done :-)

  6. Welcome to the new sketch challenges These challenges are to test your basic sketch and rendering skills. These challenges will also be run one month at a time, with the winner of each challenge receiving a link from their final work to their portfolio. You won't need a portfolio to start the challenge but having one has it's benefits in terms of exposure. The challenges will also be based on current items and not something you've designed. To enter, reply to this post with a photo (something from Goolge is acceptable) sketch and/or render of the topic of the month. This months challenge is a 6 pack of eggs in packaging. The container needs to be viewed as open so you'd see the eggs.. This is not a competition but there will be a poll at the end of each month for the best sketches to determine a winner of the month. Any questions please ask. Good Luck Crichton

Will, I like the fact that you pushing the pencil sketch issue. Your latest sketch however needs a redo if you want it considered. Perspective, Line work and the crosshatching all have issues. I could pin point and help you correct this drawing but I think you should first look through the main sketches directory or even Google product/industrial design sketches to get a better idea of what we looking for.

    Sketch Challenge July 2011

Chja0011, very good line sketch! Thanks for your entry. Will, cash68 is quite right. I hope you take this as a stearn warning, ONLY your own original line sketches and renderings may be submitted. You may only use photoshop to help you render a line sketch you have made. Cheating does not develop any skill and these challenges are all about developing your abilities to sketch. Looking forward to your next submission with your own work. Give it a try, let us crit and try and improve on your personal skill. At the end of the day, been able to sketch accurately within a very short period of time is the difference between telling a client you'd get back to him or been able to show him a few quick solutions there and then. Impressing clients in a few lines can bring alot more contracts your way than coming back to a client later. In these tough times a good basic sketch can make or break you. Think of sketch challenges as a way for you to develop a key skill in design. Crichton

    Sketch Challenge July 2011

You guys may send in multiple sketches and we'll even allow sketches which have been photoshop enhanced to help out with marker rendering but in principle this is a sketch challenge so cad is out. So far from a designer sketch point of view, it seams Cash68 is on the money. The new cad (3d) challenges start at the end of this month on the 3d challenges page.

Will It might also be the rendering?? The right side of the parts looks larger than the left, which looks much narrower. It makes it seam perhaps like it's top area tapers from a rectangular shape.

    Sketch Challenge July 2011

Well done guys, looking good! Will; the two parts that raise above the eggs in the middle look a little rectangular, or is that just the photo? Good work though! 1001sketches; looks good, could you perhaps try render in color? Maybe only to the packaging to make the closest point stand out more, to make it pop off the page. Just a thought. Off to a good start guys

    Sketch Challenge July 2011

The concept or idea is to test your drawing skill, in this case an existing egg carton or other type of packaging which exists and in the carton there must be eggs... Here's an example of what should be drawn but you may use your own example/product but then we'll need you to post a picture of the example you used (to match up lines/proportions/perspective). There's no design work here, purely sketching. Thanks Sketchyd for the idea

    Sketch Challenge July 2011

Well if you prefer other types it's fine but the idea is chicken eggs. I've noticed alot of perspective problems in the posts within the forum and this would be the ideal chance to practise, on organic shapes within a structured modular packaging container. Just remember to post a photo of the item you are sketching. This is only our starting point, from here on out the challenges will become more advanced

    Sketch Challenges: Suggest A Topic

I'd love too! But in doing so, could we then issue the winners with some incentive like I mentioned to drive a bit more traffic? Also, would I be able to set up and run challenges on the 2D and 3D front in terms of sketch challenges as well as CAD challenges..? Anyways mail me on your thoughts for this revamp and I'll try make it as exciting as possible and hopefully someone learns something from the new challenges which will benefit them in the future Andre.Crichton@hotmail.com

    Sketch Challenges: Suggest A Topic

Hello I know I'm new here but the last few days of looking around made me think why the posts are few and far between. I love what's been don with the design challenges to promote personal development and generally start debate over design topics, so why don't we try do something more frequent in terms of these design sketch challenges to "test" the drawing/rendering skills of our diverse group? We'd achieve this by making a monthly Sketch challenge based on something drawn either from current media or topics generated by a pol hosted of the main site page. For example a tsunami emergency boat, cheap domestic house, a classic 50's car, furniture by Scandinavia, African drum set, sunglasses for offroad cyclists, jogger's running shoe packaging... The idea is to not over complicate the drawing and to mainly focus on drawing skill instead of changing a design. If you change a thing or two, well that's up to you. Then constructive crit is given by members who contribute to the site and the top drawings for the month get to use a type of productdesignfourm logo for their portfolio. This will give the forum more exposure as well as say something about younger designers who are trying to get into the market, that they took part in a challenge to improve on there sketching and are keen on personal development without been licked to do so, something potential employers may value. Anyways just an idea, use what you may.

    Trolley Design

Hi. This might be a bit late but just remember that 4 Eco bags have the ability to carry the weight, but not the volume of the 16 plastic bags Would you want the user loading that kind of weight (nearly 80kg) on a plastic foldable device? If so, will the locking mechanical parts handle stress (I fear your solution might not be up to the task) also smaller wheels need a hard body to handel both the weight of the trolley and roll easy enough.. I'm mentioning it because changing the locking mechanism and wheels alone will make huge differences to the design in terms of foldability, usability, ergonomics and the overall look. It's a form follows function approach I'm talking about.. But I must say I do love the use of a device making use of currenty used products instead of a new collapsing stand alone trolley unit. Anyways that's just my 2cents, but what was the reaction from your classmates and lecturer to this device?
