    It appears to me to be a smoothing problem, likely caused by bad translation of vertex normals. 1. Right-click on your object and convert it to an editable poly 2. Go to your modify panel and choose polygons 3. Box select over everything so all the polygons are selected 4. In the polygon roll-out, scroll down until you find smoothing groups 5. There should be a button to delete or remove any smoothing 6. Then smooth it with the default value of 45 which should work out Sorry I can't be more specific, I'm not at a seat of Max right now - but if you're a little comfy with Max you should be fine

    Actually using a tangent cylinder to approximate the shape, and then split the body, seems like a very good way to get close to wrapping on a complex surface.

    Very good point, I had nearly forgotten about this, but it's absolutely a good thing to work into your workflow after every 50 or so features.

    You're right about the constraints being hard to anticipate, sometimes they work and other times they do not. Remember though that you can always turn on curvature combs inside a sketch when right-clicking your spline(s) and you can match that to be curvature. It's the more manual, direct approach but sometimes it's easier when modeling complex shapes and forms. It's true that the parametric nature of a program, any programs, is a fragile bonus once you get to a substantial feature count. However just rolling back and then forward again breaking things is of course unacceptable. I have had that with an earlier model but not with more recent models which tally 500-1000 features.   7. As much as I like smooth continuities, sometimes I think we have to take a step back and ask ourselves: "Do we really need it?" Depending on what it is, we don't and tangency is fine.

    Small Surfacing Challange

    I'll demonstrate the CATIA way in a short while. I'm waiting for the student license to arrive... Should take about 1 minute to make in Imagine & Shape Heh, don't underestimate the intricacies of subdivision surfaces, the demos make it all look easy but it's not. It takes a lot of skills and understanding to use them effectively, just like it does with solid modeling and surfacing.

    Yes I'm sure it's possible to make MatchSrf a little smarter about where it adds detail, but since unlike Alias Rhino and it's geometry is actually used at every step of every computer-automated manufacturing process there is for every sort of thing that people make, ensuring tolerances are achieved is of primary importance. I'm not necessarily denying that, hell, Solidworks probably also throws in like a million spans but it's almost never an issue. I suppose it only becomes an issue when you want to manually tweak your surface afterwards, then loads of spans make it hard to smoothly adjust your surfaces.
  12. I too think you've been using edges, for edges, for edges, for edges. Solidworks (like any system) will always lose some tolerance with each build of an edge or surface, unlike some other systems though you can not adjust your tolerance settings and maybe that would make for a nice enhancement request. Working off of edges is perfectly fine, but try to limit the amount of times you do it.

Alias Studio has got to be the worst first experience I have ever had with a 3D software program: the UI is not conform to Windows most notably the menu bar at the top not updating with your cursor position, the undo only works on changes -- not creation of new things or deletion of old even I think, ... I could go on; But somehow, the mysterious forces of the universe have made it grow on me, I can actually appreciate it now. It's not bad, not bad at all. And that scares me a little bit... :shocking:

    Al though 64-bit generally only gives you more RAM access, pushing your 32-bit system often puts the burden on RAM and can be the primary cause of system crashes on large assemblies or complicated parts.

  19. I hear you... :ermm: Real-life modeling challenges and experiences are always the best, but they don't just hand those out to anyone. How can people learn if they're never given a first change? It's hard to break into something if you haven't done it before. To that end, the best you can do is do a little something on your own, but seriously and from start to finish. If you can show that - doors might open up, because that shows tangible dedication
  20. I want to add: Spline-on-Surface isn't my favourite way to go either usually, but what it gives you though is a lot of control. It's almost like a feature that you can use to "trick" Solidworks into allowing you direct editing capabilities.
  21. Face Curves is awesome. But I feel it still made the blend look to go from smaller to bigger to smaller.
  22. Solidworks does have the ability to create this type of blend, it's under fillet -> face fillet, and the option checkbox "Constant Width" makes this happen. For some reason however the feature fails on this geometry. Not to worry. I suggest you open up a 3DSketch and create a spline-on-surface. Click on the left edge, twice on the surface, and on the right edge - making a 4 point spline. Do this for the top surface, and for the bottom surface. Attempt to space them apart roughly equidistant from each other. Then drag the spline points and tangent/weight handles until they match up. This isn't "mathematically" perfect but when the the maths fail, you've got to do it manually, just keep working on them - trim 'em and boundary surface with "Curvature to Face" and watch the purple curvature combs for a smooth comb, adjust the "Tangent Length" box to attain it.   23. I honestly don't see how one could go wrong with Solidworks, if you want affordable parametric solid modeling - you go Solidworks. While it's true in raw feature-count Solidworks and Inventor are very similar, think about it this way: Solidworks is solidworks. Autodesk is everything and inventor too. The guys over at Solidworks know what they're talking about and have been doing it for over nearly 15 years. If you're looking for a more high-end software (which I don't think a lot of companies but the really big boys do) then you could look at Pro/E. Certainly Solidworks and Pro/E are the standards in parametric CAD, for the mid-range and high ends, respectively.

    CATIA V5 has a lot of specialized modules that work quite differently than anything else, but the basic part/assembly and drawing functionality is nearly identical. You should find your way around just fine
