Ive seen these "sphere" type speakers around, and thought hell why not have the whole sound system looking like that! let me know what you think...

ok... let me be the first to say... good work, interesting stuff.
like the shape of the stands for each speaker. just something about the hi-fi section.... i am not sure of. while the speakers would look cool i think the entire unit plus hi fi would look "over powering" in any standard bed room etc. can you let us know some dimensions? please. To give us proper feel for it. i understand what you are trying to do... -------------------- "Simplicity is the core of excellent design".... is it?

well the height for the CD player would be about 30-35cm tall and about 25cm wide then i guess the speakers would be slightly taller at 40-45cm. I guess if you were to place these next to your tv it wouldnt look too small and out of proportion or if you placed two on a bookshelf it would be small enough to fit in to a gap. I guess its really what you use the speakers for and how u want to judge how big they could be... as i have shown the speakers could come on their own as well, so take your pick!

Just some quick comments about the whole project:
Tweeter, Mid and Bass use the same chassis (diameter)? wth? Why don't you just use coaxial chassis, as for example cabasse does - this would even give you the advantage of a point source. Furthermore, I don't think that there's enough volume for the bass chassis what's the diameter of the chassis? As you state in your latest post, the speakers would only be 45cm tall, so you'd have a ridiculously small subwoofer - what's the sense of this? If those speakers are that small, is there a possibility to mount them on a wall? For example next to your flatscreen? What about the wiring, where do the cables run? You make some statements in your presentation (e.g. a lage base and cover help increase depth of sound) which let me assume that you don't really have much knowledge about acoustics - true? In my eyes, if you do a project about acoustics, you should also know enough hard facts about this topic. The design itself is a good start, but needs quite some refinement to really pop (for example the connection between the base and the speaker stands etc.), also I'd advise you to increase the contrast in the presentation - the gradient in the background makes part of the speakers "drown" in the background. greetings |

well its true i dont know much about speakers, and thankfully im not a speaker designer, as the first quote in this posting said...
"Ive seen these "sphere" type speakers around, and thought hell why not have the whole sound system looking like that" i merely was looking to make the whole hi fi look in that similar design of spheres, plus from what i basically know about speakers (which is almost nothing) i put in, plus the mistakes grabs attention to people like you who do know their stuff! to look at my work... hheheh so i guess it works in my favour! but anyways this is just an idea... a sketch in CAD... and is just another piece in a small but growing portfolio! but who knows i might make a prototype, and if i do i will post! |

First of all, I like the presentation.
As said before, there are quite a bit of technical issues. Although I understand that that wasn't your primary focus, I think it has made some effect on your design. For instance, the normal "tri-speaker" would probably look much better with different sized speakers. Besides giving it some technical credit, it would also give your design some diversity that I think it is missing. I also think that you might have a problem with geometric designs. It seems as if you are designing simple shaped forms and put them together. I don't think that it is a bad starting point but it might pay-off to broaden your "shape-horizon". Personally, I don't like the base for the product. It distorts the sphere shape of your centre piece and sub but also overpowers the elegant bars holding up the individual speakers. I would like a horseshoe shape much better since it is mirrored in the afore mentioned bars. I think you've had a good start and some excellent comments from my previous posters, take their, and if your inclined to do so, my advice and make your good start a great product. |

Nephtis thanks for the comments, as i have entered the designboom speaker competition i think you comments will help in changing the idea to be more interesting than what it is. I do have some new ideas which are sort of feeding off the sphere sound system bt hopefully will be better so watch this space!...

LOL omg yeh i know when i posted this up, i checked it the next day...scrolled down and there it was the actuall thing right next to my posting duhhhhhh what a coincidence though!, but however mine is different i created the hi-fi aswell!!!! But i guess theres a lesson there tho, which is if enough people think about the same thing long enough then eventually most of those people will come up with the same idea.
