A concept design I did for an RSA design competition on ceramics last year (although didn't finish it in time to enter).

Some things aren't finalised, such as where the seam to fasten the shell closed would be, and also I don't know if i'm pushing the boundaries on what would be a strong but thin thickness for the ceramic veneer.

Any comments or suggestions welcome. Images are from an A6 flyer I made for my design at this year's New Designers expo in the UK.

Nice.
the concept is very good but honestly the way you present it makes me feel like it's meant for women (the colors, the typography, the leafes).
so i would expect for the second generation to buy one.

I think Logitech recently came up with something very similar..
I like the leaf graphic, but what is the connnection between a leaf and ceramics? I don't really see the connection there.

Here's a crazy idea.. how will something like this work on multi touch monitors as seen in recent tech demonstrations? How would a remote pointer work on something you're supposed to touch?

i like the approach it's fresh and full of potential...
however two things look like they can evolve:

1- ceramics are breakable
2- you don't need a ball the whole surface can be a sensor that translate the fingers movement onto the screen..

hope this helps

Its a nice design, but it kinda reminds me of a bar of soap and I have the feeling it would slip out of the users hand pretty easy. Also i'd be abit wary of pressing a button when i moving the cursor, as when my thumb is pulled back it bends downwards, if you get what i mean. Also dont forget that there are left handed and right handed people so it would be nice if there was someway of making usable for both hands.

I like the Idea but I think the leafs are an extra personal touch that will turnoff some customers. maybe going into something more simple and that would suit anyone. I wouldn't give you ideas since i dont want to influence your creativity.

And for the ball, i like it. it reminds me of the blackberry, its pleasent to use. I understand why some find it old school; its solid. Try figuring something out with it.

here's a hint: futuristic

friendly,
Saad

The way I took it, it uses a Wii-like accelerometer to move the mouse around, while the ball is just a stylished scroll wheel? If that's the case, I think most of the above criticisms wouldn't apply (and if it's not the case, that would be a cool design, too).

I like the detailing. The colour in the last pic resembles really old computers and equipment, though. Beige still doesn't work on technology, I find.

I personally love the leave buttons. They add a very welcome touch of non-tech natural feeling that is so rare in electronics. Of course, this is probably a personal touch some won't like, but it wouldn't be too big of a deal to make more than 1 aesthetic design if the functional concept took off.

Relating to somebody's comments about the scroll sphere looking like a berry, I think it would be great if it was connected to the stem like a real berry. If you're going to commit to the natural aesthetic with leaves, this wouldn't be much of a stretch and might incorporate the one thing that I think looks ever so slightly out of place.

Firstly, like the others have already said the leaf motif is really nice.

You present the mouse more as a remote control, something for the living room couch not the office desk?

I like the idea of ordinary generic things like remote controls or computer mice being stylish sculptural elements to a lving space.

I like the idea of using Ceramics to achieve this, a medium Synonymous with elegance & craftsmanship.

However I feel you have take this opportunity to utilise the features of ceramics and then decided to do none of them.

You basically designed a typical industrial mass made plastic product and just labelled it a ceramic mouse.

I feel you should have been a little more daring and creative, introduce the tactile experience you are talking about with interesting textures. Play with the properties of ceramics, glazing techniques, colours, glass, transparency etc etc..

ALso Im really not sure about the overall imagery,

someone has said it seems feminine, personally I think it also suggest something "personal care" it suggest something like female contraception or sanitary products to me! -lol (icky)

Also, just like to say "tactual" is not a word.

I think you were looking for "tactile"
