Last session of this month, it's up a bit later than I initially wanted but better late than never.

Anyways, this month we'll be looking at public transportation. Surely there must be a better and more fun way of traveling around than being packed like sardines in loud busses or tacky trains?
Try to sketch a way of public transportation that would make things better for the user. To make things a bit more fun, you can be a bit futuristic if you want (personal maglev devices on rails? why not?)

Try not to make renders, keep it fast and simple.

a quick one before i head off to bed

looking on it now, it looks kinda dangerous! basically an automated trolley that zooms around town on a route that it is fixed to by rails, and that has a display showing what route number it is on, and people are free to hop on / off. i think i gave a bad impression with the paper colour - the rails it runs on wouldn't be around in the sky! though that isn't such a bad idea ... gotta work on that safety aspect! biggrinsmiley.gif

The physics of a sliding car bearing the weight of 10+ people would be interesting - would require a hell of a lot of electricity, which raises concerns over safety (again!) of people interacting with the track itself, and costs for the operator. keeping the magnetic track clean would be hell as well - perhaps a sweeper on the front of the trolley that knocks objects out of the way i like street sweeping vehicles! - never liked them, noisy things. Even better, the rail would be good if it were above the trolley, public interaction becomes difficult, but maintenance and weight considerations come into play. am i over-analysing this?

On EM transport, has anyone actually made electromagnetic transport a reality yet? Any links? I would imagine there are many "maglev" design considerations to ponder and design around.

Maglev could certainly be an option.. heck, there's already tons of rollercoaster like rides out there working on that principle. I think Shanghai has an operational maglev line as well.
I like the idea of a moving busstop/monorail crossover, perhaps you can make some kind of enclosure? If the rails are high the main danger would be falling down I think hehe

Just a thumbnail sketch, might try do a clean sketch later. But yeah seriously lacking some persistent, took awhile to come up with the style =/. Also I think the proportion and scale is abit off.

Ohh btw, it is a flying bus. No traffic jam, gets to destination faster then cars, also you get a good view of the city.

Hmm I just realised that bad sketch is not really a problem but the design/styling of the product itself must be strong for it to be good. Have a look at my sketch.

So yeah probably when designing something, forget about how you use the pencil and think more about your actual design. But yeah this is a sketch session so nvm LOL...

Anyways good attemp American Michael I like how you use the background, adds depth and realism.

@bowlofnoodle
ehm, look at your sketch?
1. just to answer your question: your design is neither new nor strong. sorry.
even those old 60`s transport helis had more style and visionary content than yours...

2. a good presentation is crucial. even a good idea needs it.
3. your sketch is really poor. sorry again.

@american michael
for practice itテつエs helpful to sketch as big as possible. try to do some big "offline" sketches. donテつエt worry about how to scan or transfer your image into your pc. itテつエs way more important to focus on sketching techniques, first. this monthテつエs topic is ideal for practicing perspective and proportions. donテつエt worry about design. set up a simple concept and focus on these topics.
keep it up!

I can't have read the thread too well because I've done a vehicle for a single user, but let's say there are lots of them and you just hop on one as they aer left on the street in some sort of utopian society or something.

Anyway, it's based losely on the Sinclair C5. ONE of the C5's major drawbacks was the fact that the user was low to the ground and so not easily seen. In this version they stand up. It's a bit superceeded by the Segway, but hey it's a practice on trying to get something out of Sketchbook Pro.

Well, here it is...

try to find a photo of someone standing in that position ... and try to trace the contour... and you'll have something looking more finished to match the look of the sketch I think.

Too right, now drawn the silhouette and think it looks much better. I need to work some more on my skteching style I think. Anyways... thanks for the crit original.gif

Nice, try to find a photo of someone standing in that position (or roughly in that position) and try to trace the contour, adjust it a bit (move the arms/hands in right position) and you'll have something looking more finished to match the look of the sketch I think.

My idea of mass transportation which uses a cable railway....... Nice and cosy, dangling on a cable with all your colleagues, going to work in your own pod (how original, Ipod.....:-(....)

Thought I'd add a quick painting/ sketch to this months sketch session. Back to the future car (wheels rotate downward for flight... realistic right?, haha) meets the Nebakanezer from the Matrix. Would it work, probably not, but I just wanted to get something drawn over the break!
