my main goal was to elimate a protective cap or external wire to connect the device to a computer. i also wanted to find a way to protect the headphone plug from being damaged or damaging the unit itself. while in the pocket the plug can produce stress on the jack.

Very nice man.. I like that dial on the back and the orientation of that minijack connector. I wonder though if it's big enough for some of those bigger minijack plugs that you usually get on the more expensive headphones.
Why not switch the functions of those buttons? Back/Forward the left and right button and Play/Pause(Stop) for the middle button? My ipod doesn't have a stop button, just a pause one and after a while on pause it goes on standby and eventually turns itself off for longer periods of non-use. This could probably work just as well with your player and eliminate some of the skills needed in operating that center button (which would be a logical location for a play button.. right bang in the middle). |

I like what you did with the jack placement, but I'm not too sure about the LCD/Button layout. But that could be a matter of taste.
By the way, does that tiny cell provide enough power? The one in the iPod shuffle (lithium-based) is quite a lot bigger: http://applematters.com/index.php/gallery/image_full/11/ (it's the silvery block on the left. edit: And I agree with Renszu on the buttons |

good job on the nice and clear presentation boards and good thoughts on the USB sliding mechanism and the jack placement. i also agree with renzsu on the button layout. did you do more concepts? looks like you went straightly to this one.. btw, i think it will look bettter if the buttons fit within that 'circle' with a little space between the the buttons and the lcd

Hi, i think the formal design is great, aswell the USB slides into is a great idea too. Great work in a small piece, but the first thought i have had is that battery is not enough...I tell u this cause im using every day a mp3 player and its just quite bigger than yours design http://www.mpio.com/product/productview_fl100.html and it spend a AAA battery almost everyday, i guess 6 hours or less of use.
Anyway i guess its only modify ur design a little bit in case of redesign it. Great work with the LCD display rendering, anyway, whats the name of the font u used for the "track one" title? The spotted font... I have to make an LCD for a Shower Control unit and it fits perfectly. |

Hey, Great piece o work!
I also agree about the button orientation but other than that you project is perfect example of how the problems were recognised and the product was built around it... AND the fact that it was all done without having to use ridiculous technology too... just a simple slide mechanism. I love that idea. the design is nice and the jack placement is a great idea, my only issue is the look and placement of the screen and buttons, but only cos they look a bit like they're made from neoprene. Fantastic job of presenting the progression and processes. Rob. |

thank you all for your suggestions.
i totally agree about the buttons. and to answer Waikits question, yes there are more ideation sketches...some of them involving button placement. i agree the buttons could be better thought out and i will most probably remodel the unit with a better set. we actually had a professional step in during our design process on this and when i told him what part of the design i was focusing on (slide out usb and tactile dial) he pushed me in the direction just to use common buttons and let the client imagine their own buttons. this doesnt explain my strange choice not to have the buttons match the circle of the lcd screen. that was just a poor decision. sometimes on these 2 week projects you get lost and forget some things, or worse settle on things that you normally wouldn't. i have a whole summer now to fix it! thanks again guys! bizzo |
