Hey guys,

Its been ages since I posted anything on the forum.

I thought this might be interesting to share with you guys. Its a Lure Design Competition hosted by Rapala VMC (Asia Pacific). The objective of this competition is to allow Malaysian public to storm up their own design based on individual themes.

My theme and direction for this competition is to at least design various lure that suits our local waters and anglers. The design and action to all this lure depicts our native bait-fishes in Malaysia. This selection of lure that I design is aimed for anglers to target our freshwater sport fish such as the Giant Snakehead (locally called Toman), Malaysian Jungle Perch (locally called Sebarau and many more highly rated sport fish.

Here are the visuals for your perusal.original.gif

Welcome for any critiques...cheers guys

Hi,

I really like your designs and the presentation is effective. Having done a little bit of fishing I would suggest that the way these lures physically behave in the water will also be extremely important to their performance (along with their colours and finishes).

It would be worthwhile to mock up some prototypes and test how the "swim".

Well done.

Cheers,

Nathan

Hi Nathan,

Thanks for your compliments ! It was indeed great great fun designing lures, especially when it comes to the shape, color and action to a lure.

My theme, was to design some lures that actually portrays the same look and action of our local baitfish to coax predatory fishes.

This designs are well thought of in aesthetics and presentation. It be best to do mock ups on it....ehehe I wish i had the time to explore more.

Thanks for your great feedback, btw, where are you from ? You do more freshwater or saltwater fishing ??

Cheers mate

hi,
these look great. I like the moving fins you've integrated.
are these pure handsketches or have these been made in a 3d program first?
I don't have many experience fishing with these but they look good original.gif

Hi xonegen,

Thanks for the great feedback mate !. I enjoyed very much studying and researching further into fish species, fish behavior, the finishing, shape and most importantly the action achieve to meet the 'live-like' presentation.

The moving fins, are considered to be a finer detailing on the lure to give the extra edge and attraction !

This 2D drawings are purely constructed using illustrator, and I didnt go through the sketching straight. I had drafted out in point form of what lure design im designing and the purpose for certain predator species. On screen, everything is manually done on illustrator. It took me at least a week or so (few hours after work) to complete my first design proposal. The rest was much easier when I get a hang out of it. Its time consuming but I enjoyed every part of it.

Thanks for your kind words, and you should try lure casting ! Its great fun...cheers bud.

Good day lilith,

Thanks for your kind words, not a worry about limited knowledge on fishing ! its all good...im here to share and will be great to hear feedback on it.

Everything was done in illustrator. It was kinda tricky, squeezing my head trying to achieve the correct tone and coloration on it. It was my first time doing such meticulous work..ehehe..In the end i was quite impressed on what ive achieved biggrinsmiley.gif

By the way, the results was out early this month and I was as equally shock while browsing through the mag (where they published it) I won 1st prize for this competition, which is a RM500 worth of Rapala products. Cant wait to receive them. At the same time, shortlisted entries will be submitted to Rapala Ireland (Main HQ) for the Grand Prize (Trip to Australia)

Thanks

mingmon86!! i am an avid fisherman and designer. i am always thinking about designing lures, but never get around to it.

i think these boards are amazing! crazy that they are all done in illustrator, i love them. some of the added features are pretty neat too. i especially like the RASBORA, and i think you should test a prototype to check the action. i could FDM them for you if you had an .STL file, or if you have any 3D skills you could carve them outta balsa wood like a true rapala designer should!

if nothing comes from these...they will look frickin' fabulous in your portfolio!!!

GREAT JOB! and thanks for sharing!

Very strong layouts and concepts. I am an avid angler (large mouth bass mostly). I think the "Catfish" concept is the strongest, considering I haven't seen any catfish lures out there. I would think prototypes would be needed in order to really see acction of the lures.

Good day Halocooter,

Thank you so much for your great feedback, appreciate it mate. Good to have an avid angler in the forum and you should lay your hands on designing lures !. Its very interesting and satisfying, or maybe thats how I look into it.

Thanks for the compliments. Im as impressed as you are, I actually just discovered how versatile illustrator is and its way more user-friendly and less tedious that PS. You would be the 10th person for loving the Rasbora design. I was corresponding mails with Rapala people over in Singapore. They actually finds that the Rasbora Rap is unique as it swims on its side. The best part was the finishing and the detailing thats on it. I asked him, which was the winning entry? He said all 5 of the designs are well thought and structured (ive yet to load up the 5th design)

Thanks for the heads up mate, I dont have it in .STL format since I did it all on 2D views (illustrator file) Many of my friends had advise me to take a step further in making a 3D model and test out its swim ability ! I wish I could find more time in a day biggrinsmiley.gif What happen is that, some of my designs are being sent to Rapala Ireland, to do the final judging for the grand prize winner. The grand prize winner's design will then put into consideration and actually manufacture it as an end product ! Now this competition is treated seriously !..ehehe

Halocooter, youre more than welcome to experiment with the Rasbora shape ! It be great to know the verdict of the design. Im confident that the lure will present its hopping and side walk-the-dog action finely.

Hi Siona,

thanks for the great comments n feedback !..cheers

BMiD,

Thanks for your kind words mate. Good to have another avid angler as well, largemouth are by far a good sportfish as well. If given a chance hope over to malaysia to try our respected sport fish such as the Giant Snakeheads, Jungle Perch, Peacock bass (introduced), Golden Masheer and many more.

Yeah designing that catfish lure was a great fun. I actually look and study their behavior in aquariums. They swim very sleekly and graceful..ehehe... Our Giant Snakeheads here in Malaysia are suckers for the catfish, top bait in seducing them..ehehe..

Hope to see some designs for you all there and more comments n feedback..thanks guys
