Commonly used:

#design - used across a wide range of disciplines but can find ID-related posts
#ID , #inddes , #industrialdesign - all are used for the general topic
#designthinking - obvious enough

Occasionally used:

#IDComp - for tagging industrial design relevant competitions or discussions concerned them
#IDPoll - for, what else, industrial design polls
#IDJob - if you know of a job opening and want to help pass it along to other IDers
#IndDesRFP - (replaces #IDRFP which is now an account - @IDRFP - I've set up to collect ID RFPs) for those companies (managers) seeking proposals; ideally post accompanies a link to an RFP (Request for Proposal)

Rarely used:

#IDQuo - for those soliciting industrial design quotes/wanting to submit a response to an RFP.
#IDEdu - for discussing industrial design education/schools
#IDCAD - for discussing industrial design CAD tools and issues
#IDFol - variation of Follow Friday; IDers recommending other IDers
#IDPort - for people uploading/updating their online portfolios
#IDMod - for industrial design modelmaking discussion
#designresearch - obvious; suspect this has been/is being used
#IDAuc - for those in the design community wanting to auction off some of their ID gear; ellipses, books, aso.
#IDGame (replaces #IDGames which is now a user account) - used in an effort to make industrial design process a fun, educational online social game

New suggestions:

#IDRes - short form of #designresearch
#IDTnnn - (repurposed) This was a numeric tag to track ideas for using Twitter for industrial design. It went unused. It's now intended to discuss manufacturing of a particular product or product concept with the intent of being able to move the discussion to a forum if the conversation warrants. Consider #IDT001 = #yellowclip. The next tag will be #IDT002, and so on.
#IDSketch - obvious enough; surprised it isn't already being used
#IDConcept - concept design
#designfiction - concept designs with narratives

Twitter is an interesting concept, I've not long set one up so I'm yet to see if/how it works. How does it work as a networking device? I guess it's more informal than LinkedIn (I often find myself hovering on peoples pages thinking... should i add them??? because LinkedIn makes it so hard for you to add someone!!)... Hope you don't mind my add.

Works like anything else. You never know from where a job will come. It might come from a portfolio you posted or it might be something you mentioned on a forum or it might be the tweet you read asking for help from someone in your area. The service is still evolving. And just as blogs went from being diaries for teenage girls to very worthwhile stuff from corporate CEO's and the like, Twitter will also morph (there's already a version only for companies).

I've not started any Twitter brainstorm sessions, but I've participated. It's a very worthwhile use for designers.

With recent influx of industrial designers, I'm thinking it might be worthwhile to *use* Twitter. Suggestions? (use #IDT001 hashtag plz)

For those who don't know, the hashtag is used as a search method to find all the postings using it, whether or not you follow someone. So for example, someone might make the suggestion: "Let's brainstorm simple ways to weigh things. #IDT001" and everybody can go to Twitter search and plug in #IDT001 and read the results. Of course you could use something besides a hash, but the search feature came after people had figured out how to use the #, so it's a kind of convention now. Make sense?

btw, here's a direct link to Twitter search - http://search.twitter.com (can be hard to find; for some odd reason it doesn't seem to be integrated into the browse interface)

Sounds very interesting. There's something intriguing about the update system. Instead of waiting hours for a block of text it's fed almost subconciously in bites potentially encouraging "spur of the moment" thoughts. I like the idea of it as a brainstorming tool. Will be interesting to see how it evolves.

csven, nice initiative to brainstorm about how industrial designers can use Twitter, which is a really interesting tool and worthwhile to try it out and experience how it evolves. I will join you later with that. And thanks for explaining about the hash tag and search functions.

I started http://twitter.com/designhub for this site to keep our interested members up to date and to experiment with it. It feels like a combination of a chatroom (personal) and rss feeds (relevant) so far.

I am using http://twitterfeed.com/ to feed our latest posts to our twitter account This forum software does have a RSS feed (check at the bottom of this page for the RSS icon)

I suspected you were using an RSS feed but didn't engage my brain on the Twitter side (which means I wasn't thinking in even broader terms). Seems obvious now that I've done that. Thanks.

The #IDT001 suggestion tag isn't getting much use, but in the hopes people will figure things out I've also added #IDJob ; a hashtag for helping people find job opportunities mentioned on Twitter.

Hi all, been using Twitter for about a month or two after being part of a really interesting discussion on how designers use social networking sites and apps run by Kate Andrews and Lauren Currie. First impressions of it seem pretty positive, casual but not too abstract. Its great to see so many designers exploiting its full potential.

ive been using twitter a bit- been offered freelance work through it so it cant be bad! Also good for keeping an eye whats going on in different industries- interaction design, advertising etc...if you follow the right people.
